March 21, 2008 BJP Questions Rahul
Gandhi's
Political Acumen
New Delhi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday questioned the political
acumen of Congress party MP and scion of the Gandhi family Rahul
Gandhi.
BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said here the failure of Rahul
Gandhi to change the fortunes of the Congress party in the assembly
elections in Uttar Pradesh in April 2007 was "proof of his (lack of)
ability".
Taking a dig at Rahul, Jaitley said: "Nothing succeeds in the
Congress like failure."
Rahul Gandhi had campaigned extensively during the Uttar Pradesh
elections for the Congress but the party could not improve its
tally. However, the party had not held Rahul responsible in any
manner, citing other reasons for the poor results.
Jaitley was the general secretary in-charge of the BJP for the
Gujarat polls held in December last year and is credited - along
with Chief Minister Narendra Modi - for the victory of the party. He
has now been given charge of Karnataka that goes to polls in May.
Rahul is set to travel through Karnataka March 25-29.
The Congress MP won many hearts when he visited Orissa recently. The
BJP would make all efforts to prevent Rahul from breaking fresh
ground in Karnataka as it could upset the party's calculations.
Reacting to the outburst against Rahul Gandhi, Congress spokesperson
Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the BJP should refrain from making
comparisons. "If Rahul Gandhi is the basis of the BJP's campaign,
then we feel sorry for them. The BJP should not fight elections on
such superficial comparisons."
Jaitley's comments come just a day after BJP leader L.K. Advani told
a news channel in an interview that he would not like to comment on
Rahul Gandhi's political understanding and ability.
