Tibetan Youths Storm Chinese Embassy

New Delhi
Tibetan activists protesting Chinese crackdown in Lhasa Friday sneaked into the Chinese embassy here by scaling its high boundary wall, giving police the slip. At least 35 protesters were later arrested after a clash between them and police.

Nearly 70-80 Tibetan slogan-chanting activists under the aegis of the Tibet Youth Congress came in a tourist bus before marching to the Chinese embassy in the high-security Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave at about 5 p.m.

A few protestors carrying Tibetan flags managed to jump over the wall of the embassy near its less guarded visa centre, where the cultural centre is situated, a police official said.

Although a large posse of Delhi Police was guarding the perimeter of the sprawling embassy, they were taken by surprise when the protesters entered the embassy through a side less guarded.

Wearing yellow t-shirts with the slogan - "Ban Beijing Olympics, Stop genocide", and carrying Tibetan flags, the activists clashed with police before slipping in. The activists, including women, also sported headbands with the words "Stop Genocide".

Some of the people suffered bloody scratches from the concertina wire that has been put over the boundary wall.

"At least 4-5 Tibetans entered the embassy near Gate No. 7 and were able to reach the lawns of the cultural building, from where the police whisked them away," Deputy Commissioner of Police Anand Mohan told IANS.

"The protestors were quickly forced out of the embassy. We have also detained around 30-35 people in this regard," Mohan added.

Around 10 people received minor injuries and four policemen were seriously injured in the scuffle with the activists, an eyewitness said.

Though the Tibetans have been trying to storm the embassy in the past, Friday's was the first time they managed to breach the security and scale the walls that have now been fortified with concertina wires on many sides.

On March 15, over 50 Tibetan activists were detained when they tried to storm the Chinese embassy.

The Tibetans in Delhi were protesting the crackdown by the Chinese government on protests led by Buddhist monks in Lhasa in which several people were killed.
