February
7, 2008 Kidney Scam: Doctor
Booked
for Turkish Nationals' Deaths
Faridabad (Haryana)
The police Thursday filed a case against Upendra Aggarwal, who has
been arrested for his involvement in the multi-billion-rupee kidney
transplant racket, and began probing the deaths of three Turkish
nationals in his nursing home here.
Upendra's manager Jaswant was arrested from his Shri Ram Nursing
hospital in Ballabhgarh of Faridabad in Haryana, adjoining Delhi.
"We have registered a case and are investigating," a senior police
official said.
The three Turkish nationals - Mehmet Bayzit, 55, Ishmat Gurmer, 62,
and Ahmet Yalidiram, 65 - had died under mysterious circumstances at
the Shri Ram Nursing hospital in 2003, 2005 and 2005, respectively.
Upendra at that time had claimed that they all died of cardiac
arrest within hours of being admitted to his hospital.
In 2006, the Turkish embassy in India took up the matter with the
external affairs ministry, which asked the Haryana government to
conduct a medical enquiry.
A team of two doctors probed the deaths and found medical negligence
and irregularities, and also noted that no post-mortem examinations
of the deceased were conducted.
In its report, the team suggested a vigilance probe against the
doctor and his hospital, but the case was later hushed up.
Upendra's driver Harpal, who was arrested by the Gurgaon police for
his involvement in the kidney scam that came to light last month,
spoke during his interrogation about the deaths of the three Turkish
nationals.
Harpal was Wednesday sent to 14-day judicial custody.
The kidney transplants racket, which served international clients
from Britain, the US, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Saudi Arabia and
Dubai, was busted by the police forces of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh
Jan 24 in Gurgaon, an emerging IT hub on the outskirts of the Indian
capital.
The Moradabad police then arrested Upendra, an associate of Amit
Kumar, the alleged kingpin of the racket. Amit alias Santosh
Rameshwar Raut and his brother Jeewan and their assistant Saraj
Kumar have been absconding.
