January
2, 2008 Condition of Sheikh
Hasina Worsens,
No Treatment Abroad
Dhaka
A day after detained former premier of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina fell
ill inside a courtroom, the authorities in Bangladesh have ruled out
medical treatment abroad for her and have alleged that she was not
giving details of her ailments. Meanwhile, the condition of Hasina
has worsened.
Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Major Shamsul Haider Siddique
Tuesday said there was no way to send detained Hasina abroad for
treatment under the jail code but they would form a medical board
for her.
He claimed the Awami League chief was "not helping the jail
authorities" regarding her treatment.
Hasina, 61, has been in jail since July 16 on charges of extortion.
More corruption cases have been filed against her.
The official said: "The IG-prisons visited Sheikh Hasina Monday
night at the special jail set up at the Jatiya Sangsad premises and
asked her to give details about her physical condition. She is not
helping us about her treatment."
On Monday, Hasina had perspired heavily in the courtroom as her
blood pressure fluctuated, requiring her removal to the jail and
adjournment of the trial for the day.
The former prime minister could not appear before the court Tuesday
morning as her condition deteriorated.
"We provided four doctors for her treatment. She selected them. The
doctors sought her cooperation for some tests but she did not
cooperate," said Siddique, adding: "As she did not cooperate with
the doctors, her treatment would be provided according to the
medical board's directions."
Siddique told The Daily Star newspaper: "As the jail code does not
allow treatment facilities abroad for inmates, the former prime
minister would be given treatment at any hospital or clinic she
chooses in the country."
Meanwhile, 41 intellectuals, poets, educationalists, authors,
journalists and cultural personalities in a joint statement
expressed concern about Hasina's health.
In another joint statement, 308 doctors also expressed concern and
urged the authorities to send Hasina abroad for treatment if
required.
