Khaleda Zia Loses Control Over Party

Dhaka
The former ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday announced reforms that wrested virtually all control and authority from party chief and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, officials said.

"After the reforms in the party constitution there is no scope for Zia to hold any position in the BNP," said Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, one-time Zia's close political ally.

Bhuiyan, who is tipped to become the new party chief after Zia, said the reforms had taken away the absolute powers of the party chairman.

Zia stepped down from power last October amidst political unrest but she hopes to take part in the polls when these are held by the interim government.

Party sources claimed that Zia was likely to be expelled from the BNP for widespread corruption of her close family members and friends during her five-year regime.
