China Tells Bangladesh
About Road Link via Myanmar

Chinese leaders have reiterated their interest in establishing a direct road link with Bangladesh via Myanmar from its southern province of Yunan to enhance trade and give the landlocked area access to the Bay of Bengal.

China's long-drawn interest in getting road connectivity with Bangladesh came up once again when a delegation led by Bangladeshi Commerce Secretary Firoz Ahmed visited Kunming, the capital of Yunan, New Age newspaper said Monday.

Ahmed said Dhaka has asked Beijing to persuade Myanmar into joining the initiative for road connectivity for exploiting regional trade potential.

A cross-country road through Myanmar will enable people to travel between Kunming and Teknaf in Bangladesh in eight to nine hours, while a high-speed train ride between Yunan's capital and Beijing takes about 30 hours.
