Srinagar/New Delhi
Indian Army soldiers Sunday foiled two infiltration attempts in
Jammu and Kashmir, killing eight armed militants trying to sneak
across the Line of Control (LoC) from Pakistan, officials said.
This is the first time in recent memory that so many infiltrators
have been killed in a single day and clearly indicates that
infiltration from across the border is continuing unabated, the
officials said.
One Indian Army junior commissioned officer (JCO) was killed and two
soldiers were injured, while eight AK-47s were recovered after the
incidents.
In the first incident, five militants were killed after a fierce gun
battle in Tangar region of south Kashmir, an army officer in New
Delhi said.
Five AK-47s were recovered in the incident, in which the army
suffered its casualties, the officer added.
In the other incident in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, three
heavily armed militants attempted an intrusion near Gawalta village
in Uri sector, police said.
"Alert troops challenged the group of militants who opened fire at
the security forces. The fire was returned and in the ensuing
gunfight, three militants were killed," a police official in
Srinagar said.
Three AK-47s and a large quantity of ammunition were also recovered
from the site, the official added.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony has frequently stated that infiltration
from across the frontier is continuing though there has been a fall
in the number of militants who try to come across.
Because of this, he has said, there was no question of reducing
troops levels in Kashmir, as some political parties in the state
have been demanding.
Any decision on demilitarisation would be taken on the
recommendations of the Indian Army, the minister has said.
