Rain, Storm Kill 200 in Pakistan

Heavy rains and storms have killed at least 200 people Pakistan's port city of Karachi in less than 24 hours, an aid group said Sunday.

Strong winds and rain caused widespread damage, toppling roofs and billboards and disrupting communication and traffic systems in the city of some 15 million people.

"Dead bodies of 200 people have been brought to our mortuary since Saturday night till Sunday afternoon," the Edhi Foundation said.

A majority of them were killed during the storm and heavy rains, Rizwan Edhi, chief volunteer said.

He said they were killed in incidents of wall collapses, billboards and trees falling, electrocution and road accidents.

More than 200 injured including women and children have been admitted to different hospitals in the city, officials said.

Storms and rains have badly affected the traffic system.

Several localities of the city are inundated.

The city administration has established emergency centres at different points, and emergency was declared in hospitals Saturday night to treat injured.

The storm badly affected power supply as several parts were without electricity overnight, which sparked several demonstrations Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Torrential rain lashed Karachi at 4.30 p.m. Saturday after scorching heat and summer temperatures touched 40 degrees Celsius.

The meteorological office has recorded more than 15 mm rains in the city and its outskirts. It has also predicted more rain in 48 hours.
