Aborted Female fetuses Found in Gurgaon, Quack Arrested
Gurgaon
Several aborted female fetuses were found Thursday from a sewage
tank at an illegal private nursing home here and the owner of the
clinic has been arrested.
Acting on a complaint by the state health department, Haryana Police
conducted a raid at Buala Nursing Home in Pataudi village near here
and discovered the dumped fetuses from the tank in its premises.
The owner of the residence-cum-clinic, A.K. Singh, was arrested for
conducting sex determination tests.
The fetuses and bones have been sent for forensic tests.
Principal Secretary, Health, Urvashi Gulati Thursday said that the
raid was conducted after the doctor conducted a sex determination
test on a decoy female customer sent by the health authorities.
The raiding team was led by Haryana's Director Health Services, O.P.
Mittal. The search operation lasted over 12 hours.
Sex determination tests are banned in the country under the
Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.
The raiding party recovered the ultrasound machine being used by the
owner for the tests.
A court here had recently convicted Singh for practicing as a
medical practitioner with a bogus medical degree.
Singh had put up a board outside his clinic saying that sex
determination tests were not being carried out.
In 1994, he had been fined for possession of spurious drugs.
A case has been registered against him under provisions of the
Indian Penal Code, including cheating, and the Medical Council Act.
Gulati said that 35 cases had been registered in Haryana in the last
two years against doctors illegally conducting sex determination
tests.
