Iran Regrets G8 Call for Halting
Uranium Enrichment
Tehran
Iran has expressed regret over a declaration by G8 nations urging
Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment and reprocessing
activities.
A foreign ministry press release, quoting spokesman Mohammad-Ali
Hosseini, said that the G8 summit "has ignored Iran's inalienable
right to enjoy nuclear technology and use it in a peaceful way",
IRNA reported Sunday.
Hosseini, according to the statement, underlined Iran's principled
policy in defending its indisputable rights.
"Iran has had a close cooperation with all regional and
international organisations including International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) and has permitted its inspectors to visit facilities.
"In spite of repeated statements of IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei
about lack of any diversion in Iran's peaceful nuclear programme,
unfortunately, the G8 summit in its declaration has accused Iran of
being inattentive towards the international community's demands,"
Hosseini said.
The spokesman, however, said that Iran would welcome diplomatic
approaches, especially negotiation mechanism, to answer questions
and possible ambiguities concerning its peaceful nuclear programme.
The G8 summit at Heiligendamm in Germany had said it would "support
adopting further measures, should Iran refuse to comply with its
obligations" under UN Security Council resolutions 1696, 1737 and
1747.
Hosseini in the press release noted that imposing sanctions against
Iran by certain powers and trying to isolate it would never affect
the will of government and nation to demand its indisputable rights.
