BJP Gains, BSP Maintains Lead: Exit Poll

New Delhi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would gain from the fifth round of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections even as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is set to maintain its overall lead in a hung house, an exit poll predicted after the polling Saturday.

Of the 57 constituencies that went to polls in the fifth leg, the BJP is set to win 21 seats, up from the 17 it has in the outgoing house, while the BSP is tipped to win 14 seats, down from 18. The ruling Samajwadi Party will win 10 seats (14), while the Congress will add five more to the four seats it has, the exit poll conducted by NDTV showed.

Making projections for the entire state from the five of the seven rounds of voting held so far, the exit poll said the BSP would secure 120-130 seats (97), the BJP and allies 115-125 (107) and the Samajwadi Party 95-105 (145), leading to a three-way split.

While the Congress would win 35-45 seats, up from 25, the others will secure 15-25 seats (28).
