Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has supported the controversial
marriage of a Sindhi girl to a Muslim boy that evoked protests from
radical Hindu organizations here.
Nasreen said she regretted the hue and cry over the wedding of
Sindhi girl Priyanka Wadhwani with Muslim boy Mohammed Omer after he
converted to Hinduism on April 5.
"Every individual should have complete freedom of choice. Each and
every person has the right to choose his or her life partner, so
where is the room for any objection?" she asked Monday.
Her defence of inter-religion marriages comes even as the
Majlis-e-Shura of the Masjid Committee here appealed to Muslim men
to marry within the community.
"Muslim youth should marry within the community as far as possible
or at least keep away from those inter-religious marriages that may
cause embarrassment," said Masjid Committee secretary Syed
Wasimuddin.
The marriage has also irked the Sindhi community, which accused
Muslim youth of luring their girls. Several Hindu organizations
joined the melee, demanding Omer's arrest and the girl's return to
her parents.
However, the Bombay High Court has upheld the marriage and asked the
Madhya Pradesh administration and the state police to provide
security to the couple.
