Uzbekistan invites India for gas exploration

New Delhi,
Gas-rich Uzbekistan has invited India's Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) for exploration activities.

While GAIL has identified four blocks for gas exploration, India has also offered to help establish a training institute in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent to offer technical know-how in gas technology, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement Sunday.

Tashkent's invitation came during Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh's visit last week to Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan to strengthen bilateral economic ties, especially in oil and gas and in cotton textiles.

During his meeting with Uzbek Prime Minister Sevkit Mirziyayiv in Tashkent Friday, Ramesh also expressed India's keenness to explore Uzbekistan's gold mines.

CLC Textiles, one of India's leading spinning and yarn majors which recently invested $81 million in Uzbekistan's cotton spinning industry, plans to invest another $40 million there over the next tow years.

India and Azerbaijan have agreed to cooperate in areas such as oil and gas. GAIL and ONGC Videsh have also decided to participate in the Caspian Sea Oil and Gas Exhibition being held in Baku, June 3-4.
