Baghdad
Violence raged across Iraq Saturday with more than 75 people killed
in two separate car bomb attacks in Baghdad and Karbala.
In
Gadiriya, southern Baghdad, at least 35 people were killed and
around 50 wounded when a suicide bomber detonated his
explosives-laden car on a bridge packed with traffic, eyewitnesses
and police sources said.
Interior Ministry officials would confirm only 10 dead and about 15
wounded. Eyewitnesses however said they saw many more bodies in
burnt car wrecks on the bridge and in the river.
In Karbala, a holy city dominated by Shia 100 km south of Baghdad,
more than 40 people were killed and 60 wounded when a car bomb
exploded in the centre of the city, police sources said.
The attack was around 500 metres away from the shrine of Imam
Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed and a revered icon among
Shia Muslims. His shrine is considered sacred and is a pilgrimage
site.
The Gadiriya attack is the second on a bridge in three days. On
Thursday, a truck bomb, killing at least 10 people and injuring more
than 25 struck a key bridge over the Tigris River.
US-led coalition forces Saturday detained 17 suspected
"terrorists," including a reported Al Qaeda in Iraq
military leader, during operations across Iraq, the US military
announced.
North of Baghdad, near Taji town, eight suspected insurgents were
detained, a statement said. Among them was the suspected Al Qaeda
emir (leader) of Rusafa area in Baghdad and a former vehicle-borne
explosive device cell leader.
In Mosul, about 400 km north of the capital, coalition forces
captured two suspects with ties to recent Al Qaeda attacks on Iraqi
and coalition forces, the statement added.
During a raid in Baghdad, three suspects of Al Qaeda in Iraq were
captured and four more were captured in the eastern Amiriyah
neighbourhood, also in the capital.
