Poignant Scenes as President Confers Posthumous Gallantry Awards

New Delhi
Poignant scenes were witnessed Wednesday as President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam conferred 28 gallantry awards - 15 of them posthumously - on personnel of the armed forces and the police, as also civilians, for their bravery in fighting insurgency and fending off criminals.

The solemn ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the presidential palace, as Kalam, the supreme commander of the Indian armed forces, also conferred distinguished service awards on 43 senior officers of the army, the navy and the air force.

The Kirti Chakra, the second highest gallantry award in peacetime, was conferred posthumously on Major James Thomas, Col. Gurbir Singh Sarna, Dhirendra Nath Pratap Singh of the Central Industrial Security Force and Vijay Pal Singh, a fireman from Uttar Pradesh.

Havildar Manjit Singh also received the Kirti Chakra.

The Shaurya Chakra, the third highest award for gallantry, was posthumously conferred on Lt. Col. Vinay Rao Chauhan, Capt. Shashi Bhushan Singh, Naik Gurjant Singh, Gunner Ranjeet Singh, Rifleman Huidrom Bijendro Singh, Company Havildar Major Sarbjit Singh, Naib Subedar Raj Bahadur and Sepoy Satnam Singh.

Lt. Col. Raj Kumar, Major Shineesh Mukundan, Major Naveen Bindal, Capt. Thiyam Ibungochouba Luwang, Subedar Devi Prasad, Naib Subedar Mohammad Maroof, Havildar Bhag Singh, Havildar Jagat Ram, Rifleman Suresh Singh Solanki and Lance Havildar Sishpal Singh were also conferred the Shaurya Chakra.

The civilians who received the medal were L. Subramaniyan of the Kerala Police, Sitaram Sharma of Madhya Pradesh (both posthumous), as also Pankaj Sharma and Jangal Narayan Pandey (both of Assam), and Ram Karan Bhamer of Madhya Pradesh.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju and Minister of State for Defence Production Rao Inderjit Singh were among those present on the occasion.
