Kerala to Conduct OBC Survey

Thiruvananthapuram
Kerala will soon conduct a survey of people belonging to the other backward classes (OBCc) to determine their socio-economic status, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan announced here Wednesday.

"The survey, to find out about the socio-economic status of the OBC, would be carried out by the Planning Department," Achuthanandan told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting here.

Included in the OBC list are Muslims who constitute nearly 23 percent of the state's population of 32 million. Also included under the OBC category are almost 10 percent of the Christians - forming 22 percent of the state's population - including Latin and Nadar Christians.

The biggest chunk of the OBCs comes from the Hindu Ezhava community that constitutes more than half of the Hindus here, nearly 50 percent of the state's population.

The survey would thus cover close to 50 percent of the state's population.

Former chief minister A.K. Antony had made a similar attempt that was abandoned after a section of the OBCs objected to certain questions in the survey.
