Demilitarization in Kashmir
Not Possible Now: Indian Army

With "Pakistan still supporting terrorists and running training camps", the Indian Army thinks demilitarization in Jammu and Kashmir was not the "right option" at this time.

The general-officer-commanding in chief (GOC in C) of the army's Northern Command, Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag, told newspersons in Reasi Wednesday: "Professionally speaking, demilitarization is not the right option at this time and it is not possible."

He said it was a crucial period for the state as infiltration of militants from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir was still on. According to him, there were about 1,500 militants present in the state.

"Besides, Pakistan is still supporting terrorists and running training camps," Gen Panag noted, adding that it was not right to talk or recommend demilitarization right now.

He, however, stated that whenever the government feels the situation is appropriate, the army would be happy to move to barracks.

Earlier, Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) S.K. Sinha also said that time was not right for troop cut.

"When states like Punjab and Rajasthan cannot talk of demilitarisation, I wonder how can we think of Jammu and Kashmir," he said.
