US Wants India to Extradite
NRI Murder Suspect

Phoenix (Arizona)
US police want to extradite Avtar Grewal, a Canada-based NRI who they suspect flew in to Arizona from Canada to kill his estranged wife and then fled to India.

A spokesman of Arizona's Maricopa County Attorney's Office said they want to return Grewal to Phoenix where the crime took place to face first-degree murder charges.

It takes 60 days to file extradition documents, Barnett Lotstein said. "These things often take a long time because there are numerous international bodies involved, but we persevere."

Because the United States is one of only a few countries that uses the death penalty, extradition processes can take even longer to bargain with a country that refuses to extradite if prosecution wishes to seek capital punishment.

Although the county attorney has not filed to seek the death penalty against Grewal, Lotstein said that shouldn't be a problem because India imposes death sentences.

Police cited by local media said Grewal flew to Phoenix from Canada last week, killed his 30-year-old wife, Navneet Kaur, in her Ahwatukee home and fled to India. He is in Delhi Police custody in Tihar Jail in New Delhi.

Officers found Kaur's body in her home where she lived alone. Kaur was seeking a divorce from Grewal, they said. Kaur's autopsy has yet to be completed.
