Punjab Couple Duped of Over Rs.3 mn

New Delhi
A couple from Punjab was conned into coughing up over Rs.3 million by a fraudster in exchange for a seat for their son in a medical college. The accused has been arrested.

Sleuths of economic offences wing (EOW) arrested N. Mohanan from the city's shopping hub of Connaught Place for allegedly duping the couple, Rajiv Mehta and Sudesh Mehta, of Rs.3.2 million.

The couple, both doctors, run a small hospital in Pathankot city of Punjab. They wanted to get their son admitted to the Santosh Medical College in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The Mehtas contacted N.K Singh after reading fake advertisements in a daily promising help in securing admissions.

Singh introduced the couple to Mohanan, who runs a consultancy firm in the capital. Mohanan promised he would get their son a seat in the medical college and took the money from them.

According to police, Mohanan fled with the money after failing to get the boy admitted into the medical college.

"The Mehtas came to us in February with their complaint and a probe was launched," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police K.K Vyas said.

"We have launched a search to apprehend another absconding man," he added.
