Mayawati Ahead in Hung Uttar Pradesh Assembly: Opinion Poll

New Delhi
Uttar Pradesh is heading for a hung assembly though Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is tipped to emerge as the single largest party, according to an opinion poll conducted by a private news TV channel.

The BSP is expected to get 150-160 seats, while the incumbent Samajwadi Party (SP) is seen as getting 140-150 seats in the 403-member assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will get 55-65 seats, the Congress 30-40 and others 10-20, according to the NDTV poll, results of which were telecast late Thursday.

The poll covered a sample size of nearly 16,000 voters in 133 constituencies across the state, the channel said in a statement. The fieldwork was done between March 2 and April 2 by GfK-MODE.

In the outgoing house, SP has 142 members followed by BSP (111), BJP (87)And the Congress (16).

The poll found that 40 percent voters feel Mayawati would make the best chief minister even as incumbent Mulayam Singh Yadav comes a close second with 36 percent voters backing him. Kalyan Singh of BJP is ranked third with 24 percent of the voters supporting him.

The Congress had fielded party chief Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi, MP from Amethi, for campaigning, hoping to improve its electoral prospects in the state. The poll showed that 54 percent voters say his road shows would make a difference.

However, 72 percent of them found his comments on the Babri Masjid issue, that the mosque would not have been demolished had the central government been headed by a Gandhi, not in good taste.

On the other hand, 65 percent of those who say they support BJP believe that the party's campaign to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya is no longer an election issue.
