Coal India Eyes Expansion in 11th Plan

Kolkata
State-run Coal India Limited (CIL) is planning to expand its annual production by around 60 million tonnes with an investment of Rs.180 billion in the 11th five-year plan.

"We have set a target to achieve 521.5 million tonnes (MT) productions in the 11th five year plan from the present 360.94 MT (during the fiscal 2006-07). The total investment will be made from internal resources," CIL chairman Partha S. Bhattacharya said here Thursday.

He said in the 10th plan period, CIL registered an increase of 81 MT in raw coal production.

In 2006-07 fiscal, the total raw coal production was 360.94 MT and another 160 MT is needed in the 11th plan to meet the target, he said.

"In the 10th five-year plan, a total of 97 projects were approved, of which 81 got sanctioned. We are expecting 112 MT of incremental productions from these sanctioned projects by 2011-12," said Bhattacharya.

In the 11th plan, the CIL is involving 119 projects with expectations of 70-75 MT production increase by the end of this plan period.

"We need 41,000 hectares of land for expansion of CIL projects in the 11th plan period, while 13,000 hectares will also be required from the forest area," he said.
