March from Meerut to Delhi
to Celebrate Sepoy Mutiny

New Delhi
A march from Meerut to Delhi, exhibition of rare photographs, news clippings, post cards and cartoons in the national capital would mark the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.

It was in the Meerut cantonment in 1857 that sepoy Mangal Pandey fired the first shot that ignited the mutiny by the disaffected Indian troopers of the English East India Company's army. Many historians call the mutiny first freedom struggle of India.

The Delhi government has decided a yearlong celebration comprising all the above areas in the capital city beginning May.

According to officials of the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's office, thousands of people from various states, including Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, would walk from the Meerut City centre area to Delhi.

"It was decided to organise an exhibition of rare photographs, post cards, lithographs, cartoons including newspaper clippings from British dailies and journals published during 1857," said an official of the chief minister's office.

"The exhibition would be mounted in prominent galleries and would remain open to general public for a month or so at two or three places by rotation," he added.

The state government has asked the archaeology department to submit a list of places that has significance with the 1857 revolt. Several places including Khuni Darwaja, Kashmere Gate, Zafar Mahal and Ajit Garh would be decorated and have description on plaques about their significance.

"The description would be bilingual and make general public aware about the significance of the revolt in Delhi. It was also decided to exhibit charts showing direction of places associated with the uprising," the official added.

A light and sound programme is also being planned to relate the involvement of the people of Delhi in the struggle. Staging plays in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi will also be held in this regard.
