Inflation Hits Two-Year High at 6.12% 
The government Friday promised remedial action as inflation zoomed to a two-year high of 6.12 percent, raising worries over interest rates and real economic growth. The year-on-year inflation, measured by the official wholesale price index, stood at 6.12 percent for the week ended Jan 6, compared with 5.58 percent for the week before, data released showed Friday. Strong windstorms accompanied by heavy downpours raged across northwest Europe on Thursday, causing fatalities and disrupting transport in some large cities. The storm, Kyrill has claimed about 27 lives - four in Britain, two in Netherlands, three in the Czech Republic, six in Poland and several more in Germany and other places. No Racist Slurs, Shilpa Now Says
Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty Thursday moved to defuse a ballooning row over alleged racist slurs against her in a British TV reality show by saying nothing of the sort happened, even as the future of the show hung in the balance after its main sponsor withdrew. "I don't feel that there was any racial discrimination," a highly emotional Shetty said on Channel 4, which had broadcast an episode of the Celebrity Big Brother show in which some of the participants seemed to be racially taunting the leggy actor.
