Tear Apart Nandigram Notification:
Buddhadeb
In a climb-down from his aggressive stance on industrialization,
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya Tuesday asked
district authorities to "tear apart" a land acquisition notification
that had led to a violent backlash from Nandigram villagers last
week, leading to at least four deaths. "I have asked the (East
Midnapore) district magistrate to tear apart the notification. I
have asked him to keep quiet and that I will start a political
process in the area," Bhattacharya told reporters at state

4,000 Soldiers Pressed in Operations
Against ULFA
India has pressed at least 4,000 soldiers to combat separatists in
the restive northeastern state of Assam in the wake of a string of
attacks targeting Hindi-speaking people that has left 69 dead. "A
brigade (about 4,000 personnel) has been moved to areas in Sivasagar
and Dhemaji districts in eastern Assam for operations. The
operations are on and we shall do whatever else is required to meet
the challenge," Indian Army chief Gen. J.J. Singh told journalists.

Years Hamburg: A court here doubled
the jail term for Moroccan student Mounir al-Motassadeq for plotting
the 9/11 attacks in the US to the maximum 15 years in prison.
Motassadeq, 32, had been convicted in 2005 of being part of a

judges last year added a further conviction of accessory to the

CNG Best Option to Check Pollution in
Mumbai: World Bank by Arun Kumar Converting diesel buses to
compressed natural gas (CNG) is the most effective policy to reduce
emissions from passenger vehicles in Mumbai, suggests a World Bank
policy research working paper. The conversion of 3,391 diesel buses
to CNG would result in an emissions reduction of 663 tons of
particulate matter called PM10-particles small enough to be inhaled
into the deepest parts of the lung- per year, 14 percent of total
emissions from transport, it says.
