The "Battle of the Begums", as the contest between Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia for the prime minister's job is called, has become a one-sided affair with the former boycotting the January 22 polls. Britain's NHS to Face Glut of Specialists by 2011
British medical experts believe the National Health Service (NHS) will face a glut of specialist doctors by 2011, a situation expected to further reduce the employability of doctors of Indian origin. New documents leaked to the Health Service Journal show that according to a draft workforce strategy from the department of health, NHS in England is heading for an unwanted surplus of 3,200 consultants by March 2011, "which we cannot afford to employ". Russia will help build World's First Thermonuclear Reactor by Yuri Zaitsev
A total of 13 billion euros will be spent on building the world's first International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) with help from several countries including India. The "small Sun", as the reactor is referred to, will be sited at Cadarache near Marseilles in France. Russia will finance part of the project and contribute its technologies and know-how. Tribals in Orissa Fight Another Tata Plant by Jatindra Dash
Tribals in Orissa have vowed to continue their protest against a Tata Steel plant in the Kalinganagar industrial complex here, even a year after 13 of them were killed in police firing. Over 500 tribals had clashed with police Jan 2, 2006 at the complex, 100 km from here, to protest against the construction of a boundary wall by the Tata Steel Company. Disgusted by their failure to enter a famed Hindu temple despite a court order, hundreds of Dalits in Orissa have decided to become Buddhists. They have submitted a memorandum to the Kendrapada district authorities here informing them about their move. Scores of Christian clerics from India's northeast are traveling to parts of the world to revive the faith and to fill in increasing shortage of ordained priests. "We have about 150 pastors from the northeast preaching the gospel and assisting dying churches in countries like the US, China, Thailand, Cambodia and other countries," Reverend Ngul Khan Pau, general secretary of the Council of Baptist Churches in Northeast India, told IANS.
