Air Marshal Padamjit Singh Ahluwalia will assume office Feb 1 as Air
Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the premier Western Air Command of
the Indian Air Force (IAF) here, it was announced Monday.
He succeeds Air Marshal A.K. Singh, who retires Jan 31.
Ahluwalia is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, the Defence
Services Staff College and the National Defence College. A highly
decorated and professionally respected officer, he has some 4,000
hours of flying experience on all types of fighter aircraft.
"He has held a judicious mix of crucial staff and field appointments
and has done several tours of professional and diplomatic
assignments abroad," an IAF spokesman said.
Ahluwalia has served in the directorates of electronic warfare, air
defence, aircraft induction and concept studies at Air Headquarters.
He has also served as Air Advisor to the IAF chief.
His other appointments include Defence Advisor in Japan and South
Korea, and Director General (Inspection and Flight Safety) before
his current appointment as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern
Air Command.
"Ahluwalia is considered a highly operational commander with
exceptional managerial skills," the spokesman said.
The Western Air Command is the oldest, largest and most
operationally sensitive IAF command. It is the only Air Force
formation in the world that geographically extends from a few
hundred feet above mean sea level to the world's highest airfield -
10,682 feet - at Leh in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
