Bhubaneswar, Jan 22
Team India coach Greg Chappell was Monday pushed hard from behind by
a man at Bhubaneswar airport to protest non-inclusion of an Oriya in
the national cricket team. The state police chief said the man had
done it for "cheap publicity".
Chappell has not filed any complaint.
Orissa's police chief Amarananda Patnaik said the 30-year-old man
had been arrested and a police official had tendered an apology to
Chappell over the incident.
"It is a breach of security. On my behalf the Khurdha district
police chief Amitabh Thakur gave an apology to Chappell for the
incident. We are not taking any chances now and have tightened the
security for the cricket team," Patnaik told IANS.
"The man who did the act has done it for cheap popularity. He has
been arrested."
Narrating the incident, the police chief said it occurred in the
afternoon just after the Indian cricket team had landed at the Biju
Patnaik International Airport for the second one dayer against the
West Indies in Cuttack Wednesday. They were surrounded by media
persons and were walking out of the airport when the man, Biranchi
Moharan, pushed Chappell hard from behind.
An earlier report had said that Chappell had been slapped.
About 50 protesters of the Kalinga Sena, a political party, were
also at the airport protesting against non-inclusion of any Oriya in
the team.
The man was hiding among the media persons and managed to push the
Indian team coach, said Patnaik.
Ranjib Biswal, a member of the Indian cricket board, said: "Chappell
has not lodged any complaint. He is more concerned about the victory
of team India."
Kalinga Sena chief Hemanta Ratha said that the accused person did
not belong to his organisation. "However the incident reflects the
anger of Oriya people."
