BJP, BSP Criticize
Uttar Pradesh Governor's Address

Lucknow, Jan 18
Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeshwar was virtually hooted out of the state assembly on the opening day of the special winter session Thursday.

Just as the governor entered the house to deliver his address, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) members raised slogans like "Governor go back", and "This killer government must go".

Amid uproar, the house was adjourned several times. Repeated appeals by Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey to maintain order fell on deaf ears.

Eventually, the governor had to leave without delivering his address that was taken by the speaker as "read".

What seemed to annoy the BJP and BSP were the praises sung for the government in the text of the speech that had the governor hailing the state government for "tightening its grip over the law and order situation".

The speech referred to a "positive decline" in crime including incidents of dacoity, kidnappings for ransom, road hold-ups and rioting.

On the serial killing of several children in Nithari village near Noida, the governor said the state government had dealt with sensitivity towards the victims and extended financial assistance to them.

Later speaking to reporters, Leader of Opposition Lalji Tandon said: "It is shocking that even as the governor keeps on criticizing the government outside, he could not dare to include the same criticism in his address to the house."

State BJP chief Keshrinath Tripathi termed the Congress party's earlier decision to withdraw support to the Mulayam Singh Yadav government as a "drama". He alleged, "the Congress had been a partner in the wrongdoings of the government, but now at the fag end it was trying to wriggle itself out."

He, however, said that if the Congress brought a no-confidence motion against the government, the BJP would support it.

BSP legislature party leader Swami Prasad Maurya also accused the governor of displaying apathy towards the Nithari victims in his address.
