India Takes up Akhnoor Firing with Pakistan

New Delhi, Jan 18
India Thursday took up with Pakistan the issue of firing along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir that wounded two Indian soldiers and asked for a meeting between Pakistani Rangers and the Border Security Force to resolve the issue.

"The issue was taken up by the external affairs ministry through the Pakistani high commissioner here," external affairs ministry spokesperson Navtej Sarna told reporters here.

We have requested that Pakistani Rangers meet the BSF for a flag meeting to resolve the issue, Sarna added.

Two BSF personnel were wounded along the International border in Akhnoor sector in Jammu when their patrol was fired at after challenging suspected militants who were trying to infiltrate into Kashmir from the Pakistani sector Wednesday morning.

The infiltrators were provided covering fire by the Pakistani Rangers, DIG K.S. Chauhan alleged in Jammu. It is for the first time that a major breach of ceasefire has taken place along the international border in the Akhnoor sector since the November 2003 ceasefire agreement between the two neighbours, Chauhan stressed.

The Pakistan military has labelled the Indian accusation "ludicrous and fabricated" and said that there was firing from the Indian side. Pakistani border guards did not return the fire, it claimed.
