Punjab Congress
chief unseats wife
for poll ticket
Chandigarh, Jan 17
Punjab Congress chief Shamsher Singh Dullo's electoral fight has
begun from his home - he has been named the party candidate for next
month's assembly polls from the constituency his wife represents in
the outgoing house.
The replacement for the Khanna reserved seat held by Harbans Kaur
Dullo is the most interesting aspect of the Congress list of 98
candidates released in Delhi Wednesday.
Elections for 117 assembly seats and for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat
will be held Feb 13.
Harbans Kaur, who won the seat in 2002, has gone on record as saying
she was a strong contender for re-contesting the Khanna seat and
that her husband had no claim on it.
Dullo himself had maintained he had not even applied for a ticket
from Khanna. "I will abide by what the party high command directs me
to do," he had stated.
The party is yet to release the names of 19 more assembly candidates
and for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.
The Amritsar seat fell vacant after cricketer-turned-politician
Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned after his conviction in an 18-year-old
road rage case related to the death of a man.
The Congress also did not give a ticket to Sangrur's high profile
legislator Arvind Khanna. His brother's name had figured in Iraq's
oil-for-food scam.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will contest from Patiala town while
Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal will contest from Lehra.
