Over 200 Children Missing in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jan 17
The spine-chilling revelation of the Nithari killings in Uttar Pradesh seems to have set alarm bells ringing in Jharkhand too, where hundreds of children are reportedly missing.

According to an estimate of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), more than 200 children are missing and the figure may go in thousands if police complaints are totaled.

The CID has directed police chiefs in all 22 districts in the state to compile records of the missing children and launch investigations.

In the last five years, 92 children were reported missing from the state capital Ranchi, 27 from steel city Jamshedpur, 30 from Palamau and the rest from other districts.

"We have constituted a separate cell of missing persons in our department to investigate all the missing persons but the focus will be on children," said R.C. Kaithal, Additional Director General of Police, CID. He, however, refused to tell the total number of missing persons in the state.

The National Human Right Commission had said in 2004 that Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Chattisgarh report the maximum number of missing children. Child trafficking may be the reason for this.

Meanwhile, police officials admit that information about the missing children is simply noted at the police stations and no case is registered.

"Generally the cases are not registered in the police station. The complaints are registered only as information. This prevents the cops from investigating the matter," said a police official.

"The district police have been directed to investigate the cases of missing children. We have taken up the issue seriously and any matter which comes to our notice will be investigated seriously," said J.B Mahapatra, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand.
