Rajkot, Jan 12 (IANS) India Friday announced probables for the World
Cup and the first two one-dayers at home against the West Indies,
giving former captain Sourav Ganguly a place in both but axing
Virender Sehwag from the latter.
Sehwag, a former vice captain whose batting has been in poor form,
was dropped from the squad for the first two one-day matches against
the West Indies starting Jan 21 but was included in the list of 30
probables for the World Cup, set to take place in March-April in the
Caribbean.
"He (Ganguly) is an experienced player and he's done well in South
Africa," said Dilip Vengsarkar, chairman of the selectors of the
Board of Control for Cricket in India, referring to Ganguly, whose
ouster from the Indian squad had caused a huge row.
On Sehwag's exclusion, he commented: "Sehwag has been out of form
for some time. He is a fine player and a natural stroke-maker but he
needs to go back in the nets and sort out his batting."
The first one-day match of the four match series will be played in
Nagpur Jan 21 and the second match in Cuttack Jan 24.
Rahul Dravid retained his captaincy while Sachin Tendulkar was named
his deputy in the series against the West Indies. V.V.S. Laxman,
Anil Kumble and Irfan Pathan were ignored for the first two one
dayers. But all the three featured in the World Cup probables.
Haryana captain Joginder Sharma and Karnataka opener Robin Uthappa
were also among those selected for the one-dayers. Sharma is an
all-rounder while Uthappa can, as an opener, partner with Ganguly in
the one-dayers.
Subramaniam Badrinath is captain of Tamil Nadu who was in fine form
in the last season of Ranji Trophy, which acts as the steppingstone
to get into the national team. He has naturally won a place for
selection in the World Cup squad.
Delhi's Ishant Sharma, who almost got into the Indian team against
the just ended series against South Africa, has also been selected
for the World Cup. And so is Saurashtra batsman Cheteswar Pujara,
who has represented India in the under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
Parthiv Patel makes a comeback after a long absence. The Gujarat
prodigy, who spent the last World Cup in the dressing rooms, will
face a tough challenge from Tamil Nadu wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik
and also the flamboyant Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
