Bush Names New Deputy Secretary of State
Washington, Jan 6
US President George W. Bush said he has nominated John Negroponte,
who served as the US ambassador to Iraq and the United Nations, as
deputy secretary of state.
If confirmed by the senate, Negroponte will become secretary of
state Condoleezza Rice's deputy and will fill a post that has been
vacant since June.
Negroponte, 67, has been serving as the national intelligence
director, a position created by Bush to coordinate the work of all
US intelligence agencies.
Negroponte, a career diplomat, served as US ambassador to the UN
from 2001 to 2004 and as ambassador to Baghdad until March 2005.
Bush nominated Mike McConnell, a retired navy admiral and former
director of the super secret National Security Agency, to replace
Negroponte as director of national intelligence.
According to media reports, the current ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay
Khalilzad, will be named to replace John Bolton as US envoy to the
UN. Khalilzad's post in Iraq will be filled by Ryan Crocker, the
current ambassador to Pakistan, the Washington Post reported Friday.
Media reports also have said the Bush will replace his top general
in Iraq with Lieutenant General David Patraeus, who has served on
the ground in Iraq, and name Admiral William Fallon to take over for
the outgoing chief of US Central Command, General John Abizaid.
