Increased 100% in Pakistan: Report

Corruption has increased by an astounding 100 percent in Pakistan
with 30 percent of the people paying bribes for obtaining services
against 15 percent in 2006, says a new survey.
According to the Global Corruption Barometer 2007 report released by
Transparency International, the most corrupt among the 14 sectors
surveyed was the police at 4.3 on a scale of 5, where 1 was the
least corrupt.
The taxation sector was at 4.1; utilities, political parties and
registry and permit services at 3.9; the military at 3.2; education
at 3 and religious groups at 2.7.
Globally, the report says, political parties are ranked as the most
corrupt at 4, followed by the police at 3.6 and religious bodies at
2.8.
The report also places Pakistan among the top 10 countries that are
the most affected by bribery. The other countries are Albania,
Cambodia, Cameroon, Macedonia, Kosovo, Nigeria, The Philippines,
Romania and Senegal.
According to the report, Dawn said Friday, only 20 percent of
Pakistanis think that the government's efforts to fight corruption
is somewhat effective, compared to Singapore where 88 percent think
the government's efforts are the most effective.
The sectors that had most improved due to anti-corruption efforts
over the past 12 months were the judiciary and the media and the
sectors in which corruption had increased were taxation and NGOs.
