N-Deal is Against India's Interests: Yechury

Raipur
The nuclear deal with the US is against India's interest as it would affect the country's sovereignty, Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member, said Sunday.

Reiterating his party's non-compromising stance on the controversial pact of New Delhi with Washington, Yechury termed the deal as "dangerous".

"The US has been continuously maintaining pressure on India for making the deal through," the Left MP told reporters here.

The CPI-M, a crucial ally of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, feels the nuclear deal will make India a strategic ally of the US and has threatened to withdraw its outside support if the government goes ahead with the deal.

Yechury did not agree that the deal would help India overcome its power crisis or meet growing energy demands, as producing nuclear energy will be very expensive.

The heavy expenditure, which India wants to incur on power production through nuclear energy, can be used for opening nearly 250,000 new Navodaya schools or 20,000 new government hospitals, he said.
