Johannesburg
Irresponsible batting by Bangladesh nullified their fine bowling
effort and led to their 64-run defeat by Sri Lanka in a Super Eights
match of the Twenty20 World Championship here Tuesday.
With this win, Sri Lanka opened their account with two points and
come at par with Australia, who have also played two matches like
the islanders. Pakistan lead Group F with four points.
Bangladesh bowled well to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 for five wickets
in the allocated 20 overs. Jehan Mubarak was the top scorer with an
unbeaten 31 off just 19 balls (2x4s, 1x6).
But when Bangladesh's turn came to bat, they played hara-kiri and
gifted their wickets away. All batsmen tried to play shots without
getting eyes in. It was inexplicable batting from even the senior
batsmen like captain Mohammed Ashraful.
The result was that the entire team was bundled out for 83 in 15.5
overs, with the top individual score being 18. Aftab Ahmed and
Shakib Al Hasan made 18 each as only four batsmen reached double
figures.
Pacer Dilhara Fernando was adjudged the Man of the Match for his
two-wicket burst, though Chaminda Vaas and Sanath Jayasuriya also
took the same number of scalps.
