Labour Sees Highest Approval Ratings
in 5 Years

Britain's Labour Party is enjoying its highest public approval ratings in nearly five years, latest survey poll data published Sunday showed.

The data, coming some six weeks since Gordon Browne took over as prime minister from Tony Blair, show Labour with the approval of 42 percent of Britons, 10 percentage points more than the Conservatives - the largest lead since November 2002.

The survey was conducted by the YouGov institute for the Sunday Times, with nearly 2,000 voters questioned Aug 9 and 10.

It showed that 65 percent of those questioned felt that Browne was doing a good job. The poll also showed 74 percent wanting a quick pullout of British forces from Iraq.

Since taking office, Browne has been in the public limelight in dealing with the attempted terror bombings in Glasgow and London, the severe flooding in England, and the outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease.

Amid the high approval ratings, speculation continues about whether Browne may call parliamentary elections for this fall or for the spring of 2008.
