US Ambassador gives $50,000 as flood relief

New Delhi
The United States Thursday announced a humanitarian relief of $50,000 to the victims of the floods in India that the UN has termed as "worst floods in living memory".

US Ambassador David C. Mulford announced that the contribution would be made to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mulford expressed his "sincere condolences of behalf of the people and government" of the US to the victims of the severe floods, which has affected millions of people since the onset of the monsoon in June.

"These funds have been made available through the US ambassador's humanitarian relief fund," the embassy said in a statement, adding that the US stands ready to provide further support as needed.

This year's floods have claimed at least 1,258 lives and displaced over 31 million across 20 states while causing damage to property worth billions of rupees.
